Our company’s mission is to re-shape music delivery for mobile cloud music services. We pioneered the development of ORASTREAM to overcome hurdles inherent to mobile streaming audio. Our technologies are based on MPEG4-standards that are open and accessible to the digital music entertainment industry.
We develop and deliver ORASTREAM to make mobile cloud music entertainment experience more enriching and satisfying. Our objective is to enable optimal mobile cloud music entertainment experience for consumers.
We offer ORASTREAM as a managed streaming service to boost mobile cloud music service quality. By improving customer satisfaction, our music services’ customers may retain and expand their paying subscribers’ bases.
We will also work with consumer audio companies to help them implement our software into consumer electronics, mobile hand-sets and original equipment manufacturers that license our software for incorporation in portable media players, smart-phones, home media entertainment players, in-car entertainment systems, etc., We will also license our software to application developers to implement in streaming player applications for personal computers, note-books, net-books, tablets, smart-phones, etc.,
This diagram illustrates the underlying technology used in ORASTREAM. In the ORASTREAM server, scalable audio bit-stream in MPEG-4 SLS format generated by the scalable audio encoder is packetized into different layers before being streamed out.
Based on network information such as available network bandwidth collected from a streaming client music player, the ORASTREAM server transmits (in real-time) corresponding bit-rate data by truncating unnecessary layers. The streaming client player that receives the transmission then reconstructs the scalable audio bit-stream from the received data units and decodes the music immediately (in real-time).
On current streaming music platforms, music files associated with MP3, AAC, and most other lossless audio formats (FLAC, ALAC, WAV, and AIFF) are encoded in fixed bit-rate profiles. Akin to the solid ice-cubes represented in the diagram above, these audio profiles cannot adapt dynamically to varying network conditions. When network connectivity is reduced (network congestion, interference, environment factors), music streaming would be interrupted, thus resulting in QoS and QoE experience issues.
In comparison, by using MPEG-4 SLS audio files, ORASTREAM delivers music to adapt dynamically to diverse network conditions and player devices from one single audio archival file. This has two advantages. First, the need for multiple audio encodings and bit-rate quality music files is eliminated. Second, the resultant streaming media standardization simplifies operation and maintenance of the 16-/24-bit digital audio supply chain platform; no multiple content encodes, updates, take-downs, transactional logging (For royalty reporting), lowering the costs of content distribution.
ORASTREAM is based on patents-approved audio streaming server-decoder player system to transmit and receive MPEG4-SLS encoded audio.
Frankie Tan, CEO, Co-Founder & Board Director
Frankie worked previously in venture capital investment and also held executive positions in sales, marketing and business development. He is an engineer by training. He also holds MSc degrees in Financial Management (with Distinction) University of London, UK and in Strategic Management (Dean’s Honours List) Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is a graduate of the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants United Kingdom, and a member of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA).
Kelvin Lee, CTO & Co-Founder
Kelvin has ten years of industrial R&D experience in real-time embedded software and distributed computing, in areas of audio coding, computer vision, remote sensor networks and 3D visualisation systems. He was instrumental in co-developing and commercialising MPEG-4 SLS at the Institute of Infocomm Research, A*STAR. Prior to co-founding OraStream, he was Senior Manager Technical Solutions in a leading interactive 3D visual content management and virtual reality software provider. Kelvin is a Singaporean and holds a M.Eng degree in Digital Signal Processing.
Tan Tong Guan, Board Director & Advisor
Mr. Tan Tong Guan brings 20 years of experience in business strategy, having been an executive director of investment holding company and shareholder, TGB Private Limited (TGBPL). He is also Executive Chairman of SmartFlex Holdings Ltd. and director of various companies where TGBPL hold equity shareholdings. Tong Guan graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor Degree in Accountancy and is a non-practising member (FCPA) of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA).
Jeff Van Driel, Board Director
Mr. Jeff Van Driel is Chief Executive Office at Naxos of America Inc., Naxos of America is a classical music label and the largest independent classical music distributor in the U.S. and Canada. Previously, he served as the International Head of Legal Affairs for the Naxos Group. Jeff van Driel is a U.S. citizen. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (J.D.), Corporate Law degree from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Business Administration (Finance) degree from the Wilfrid Laurier University.
Boon Swan Foo, Advisor
Mr Boon Swan Foo is Chairman of Global Investments Limited, a mutual fund company listed in Singapore Stock Exchange ("SGX") and AllGrace Investment Management Private Limited. He is also a Senior Advisor to Temasek Holdings (Private) Limited and board member of various prominent Temasek-related corporations. He serves on the board of Shin Corporation Plc, a telecommunications and satellite company listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. He also holds directorships in Dongfeng Motor Corporation (China) and China National Offshore Oil Corporation. He holds an MBA from the National University of Singapore, and has completed Harvard's Advanced Management Program. Presently, he holds an Adjunct Professorship at the Nanyang Technological University. Mr Boon was awarded the Singapore Business Award for Outstanding CEO in 2000, one of Singapore's prestigious business awards.
